Yoga – What is it?

Yoga means many things to many people, the one we all know is that yoga is for flexibility right?! We love to share our take on yoga and everything it can offer from flexibility to a whole change in lifestyle habits. I hope this gives you a little more insight in how yoga can help you!

Asana or Steady Posture

Asanas stretch and tone the muscles and joints, the spine, and the entire skeletal system.  It not only works on the body’s frame but also massages the internal organs, rejuvenates the glands, and brings a rich supply of nutrients and oxygen to the nerves.  Yoga exercise aims to keep all systems in radiant health.

Pranayama or Breath Control

Pranayama is the science of breath control and consists of a series of exercises to control the vital energy within the body.  It steadies the mind, bringing clarity and radiant health both physically and mentally.  Many people only use a fraction of their potential lung capacity and often lack Prana

Savasana or Proper Relaxation

Proper relaxation allows the body to take on the effects of yoga postures and gives the body time to recharge and retain vital energy. Tension is released increasing the flow of energy through the body.

Other areas of yoga include: Jhana Yoga (yoga philosophy), Raja Yoga (yoga of meditation), Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion), Karma Yoga (yoga of service) and Yogic Diet (simple vegetarian diet).  We may naturally take to particular aspects of yoga based on our temperament or interests, although a combination of yoga practices can lead to a healthy and more balanced lifestyle.
